Jam26 – the setup

Published:

The setup

The core of the setup is the Oxi One. It’s a MIDI sequencer, which is a device that allows you to write bits of music sheets and control electronic instruments with it. It’s the brain of the operation here (not sure if the metaphore will hold, let’s see).

On the other hand, I have an iPad with a software called AUM. This one links everything together. From there, I can choose where each midi channel will go to. It also records the music and controls the volume of each instrument.

This year, I used several instruments that I picked up over the year and some old friends.

The instruments

Virtual

These are my most used instruments. The first three appear in most of my compositions.

Sunvox is my first music software and it’s so versatile. I didn’t use it much until now but as I’m digging deeper into the realm of electronic music making, it starts to make sense to me.

Physical

Love the Nymphes, the sound is really to my taste. The MicroBrute is harder for me to grasp.

The effects

Did I mention Sunvox versatility? Well, it’s an instrument and an effect plugin. Basically you can use it to transform with all the controls of a modular setup, and it has a lot of very nice pre-built setups.

Other tools

This one is a game changer for me. It allows to fully record the MIDI without any quantization. This means that once the performance is recorded it can replay the exact same song, with the same expressivity. Ideal for the most jamming parts.

Great tool for debugging.

Conclusion

In this year, I was happy that I had this much tools available. I had trained during the year to use them and it didn’t go in my way.

I also wrote about the workflow here and about how I made the visuals with VS2 here.
